Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island in Portugal, is a small city. And yet, even in a small town, animals also find themselves abandoned and left to fend for themselves. There is still a lot of advocacy work to be done.
An unrecognizable animal
The volunteers of the Sociedade Protectora dos Animais Domésticos (Society for the Protection of Domestic Animals) have been dedicated to this task for years.
Despite their experience rescuing abandoned animals, they were surprised to see what a poor stray pooch’s condition was in. The dog was alone, completely disoriented and could not see anything under his thick matted fur.
