Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the dog.
The day had started so well.
To find a little respite on a hot day, a dog owner went with his pet to Lake Thoux Saint Cricq (Gers) on Thursday July 30.
After taking advantage of the water to cool off, things took a dramatic turn: a few minutes after swimming, the dog died after drinking water from the lake.
Cyanobacteria would be involved
According to the autopsy carried out by a veterinarian, cyanobacteria are the culprits: these blue algae which release toxins into the water, making it very dangerous for dogs but also for humans.
These blue algae have been multiplying in fresh water for a few years, because of the rise in temperatures due to global warming and the presence of the nutrients that nourish them, namely phosphate and nitrate.
After the dog’s death, analyzes of the water in Lake Thoux Saint Cricq were launched. While awaiting the results, the prefecture of Gers has banned swimming and water activities there.
What are the symptoms of cyanobacteria poisoning in dogs?
After drinking contaminated water, it only takes 15 minutes for the dog to show symptoms:
diarrhea and / or vomiting , breathing difficulties, convulsions, etc.
